The description bird flight cage obviously indicates that it is a cage of a suitable size for birds who like to fly about inside their cage. This type of cage is sometimes termed an ‘aviary’.

A bird who flies rather than just climbs inside his cage must have room to stretch their wings and thus keep the wing muscles fit and strong. Some birds are content to just hope about or climb up the bars, but for others it is necessary that they actually fly.

This flying exercise is vital to keep their skeletal and muscle structure in good order. It also benefits their heart and increases their resistance to disease.

If you are fortunate to live in a climate where an outdoor flight cage is possible this is ideal for your birds that like to fly in their cage and the bigger size is second best to being in the wild.

Obviously if your aviary/bird flight cage is situated out of doors you must construct it in such a fashion that nothing else can get in to your birds, cats for instance or even rats.

If your bird flight cage is outside it might pay you to have a smaller cage inside say for overnight or if the weather turns bad. The birds could be transferred outside for periods when the weather is clement.

If you breed your birds then naturally the aviary type cage is good because there are many perches and places for feeders to suit the increased number of birds.

If you are new to bird keeping perhaps you wouldn’t know that if a bird feels too confined it can lead to aggression and behavioral problems.

With the extra size you can give your birds more variation with perches, tree branches for instance, that would certainly make it like in the wild.

Obviously, the size of bird flight cage depends upon the size of the birds. If you just have finches for instance you can do quite adequately with an indoor cage and there are many to choose from, many different brands and styles with prices to suit every budget.
