Cockatiel cages

If you already have a cockatiel or if you are considering buying one and have done your homework you will be aware that they are very smart birds.

You need to make sure that any cockatiel cages you buy have secure locks [parrot proof] because as I mentioned they are smart birds and will soon figure out how to open the cage if you don’t have secure fasteners.

Cockatiels are a bit different from parakeets in that they like more space sideways rather than upwards so the dimensions of an ideal cockatiel cage is slightly different to a parakeet cage i.e. a minimum of 24″ x 22″ x 30″ for just one bird.

You may have a fancy for another bird to keep the first one company and if your budget can stretch to it then 32″ x 23″ x 30″ would be the new size needed to house two birds.

The inside space needs to be around twice the width of your cocatiel’s wing span without the wing tips touching either side.

The space between bars is anywhere between 1/2″ and 3/4″, this will make sure they cannot get their heads pushed through then not be able to get them back without causing themselves an injury.

This spacing is very important because your cockatiel will want to be climbing around in his home, apart from the bars not being too wide to allow him to get his head out and possibly stuck, if there is too little space he might have difficulty in getting his claws round the bars to cling on.

It is not a good idea to buy a cage from someone else, second hand if they have used it for a bigger bird. All of the above specifications need to be right for a cockatiel, particularly the space between bars.

As with other bird cages you need to make sure the cage is constructed from stainless steel, or steel with a non-toxic powder coating, or powder-coated wrought iron, also non-toxic.

Now you have all the points you need to consider when buying cockatiel cages, now all you have to do is choose the style. You must keep your little friend happy so that he can keep you happy too.
