![]() Decorative Bird CageA decorative bird cage is great as a fashion statement in your home but not for housing a bird. Unfortunately antique bird cages were painted with toxic paints which would be very harmful to your bird. Even though you may think you have stripped off everything containing harmful chemicals, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s alright to put your bird in the cage – it is not. Birds just love to bite and nibble at everything and there is bound to be a residue of harmful material. On most antique and decorative bird cages the seed guard was made from lead! Lead will cause neurological damage to your bird with devastating effect and zinc can give a bird anemia which can be life-threatening. Apart from the danger aspect, there really wasn’t enough room in these cages, I think in the old days they thought birds just sat on their perches. They made no concession to their need to fly about and keep their wing muscles fit and strong. I personally like the idea of using a decorative bird cage as a centrepiece, fill it with either silk, dried or even fresh flowers and it will look lovely. You could put a climbing plant in the cage and allow some of the tendrils to climb among the bars and this also would be very attractive. You will be able to find many different styles of bird cages from all around the world and they look wonderful with their domes and pagoda like shapes. A very attractive addition to any decor. You could even keep a bowl of fruit inside, leaving the door open for easy access. Use a decorative bird cage for that – decoration. It will be uncomfortable and even a danger to the life of your bird to put him in it. Plus it would be cruel because he wouldn’t be happy and able to fly about. |
