Parakeet cages

When you decide to have a parakeet and need to choose a cage for him you have quite a task ahead of you. The proper size is of paramount importance, as is the composition of the parakeet cages.

Parakeets tend, by and large, to spend their whole time in their cage so it must be large enough for him to be able to stretch his wings out fully without contacting either side.

They are such active little birds that they need places to perch, they like to climb and they can be destructive of their habitat.

A rectangular cage is better than a round one because they like to get up into the corners to perch, they definitely feel more comfortable in a square one even though you may feel that a round one would look better in your home.

Parakeet cages need to be strong because parakeets can be little tinkers for destroying a cage which is less than adequate in strength. It needs to be metal for a start and either stainless steel or brass plus it shouldn’t be painted because the bird will just peck off the paint, and if the paint contained
anything noxious, for instance zinc or lead, that would be harmful to your bird.

The reason for stainless steel or brass is because some cages are made from metals which can be toxic and if your bird starts chewing the bars it could be harmful to his health.

You may have seen lovely looking cages made from wood or bamboo, or even plastic, but they will not do. Your bird will quickly reduce it to rubble and be flying free when you least want him to.

Think about maintenance and cleaning of the cage. You can get some cages which have a removable tray underneath, this is easy to pull out and clean without actually disturbing the bird at all.

You need to consider also the spacing of the bars of the parakeet cages because if the gap is above 1/2″ it would be possible for your bird to push its head through and probably would get stuck and whilst he is trying to get free he could do himself quite some harm.

As I mentioned above, the size is important to your bird. Think about where it is to be situated in your home and how much space you can allow for the cage.
The very minimum you should be considering is 18″ wide x 14″ deep x 22″ high, as I say this is the minimum. Anything above that is good.

When you decide to have a parakeet you have to do your best for him and give him an environment where he will be happy. The last thing you want is a depressed parakeet!
