Birds Cages Review

Finch Bird Cage

If you have finches I am sure you have no less than two as they are companionable birds and like to have company. Although they are not big birds they do need plenty of room to fly about.

You are going to need a cage at the very least 30″ long if you just have one pair, but if you have more then naturally you will need a larger one for more pairs.

Your finch bird cage needs to be wider rather than higher for finches because they tend to fly horizontally and they are not climbers like parrots and parakeets.

As with every type of bird you must make sure that the bar space width is not so big that they can push their head through. This will lead to them struggling to get it back and possibly doing themselves some injury.

Perches in a finch cage should be placed at either end because they like to fly back and forth between them. You can create perches from wooden branches but be sure you don’t use cedar, redwood or wood-chip because these can be toxic for your birds.

When your perches become really soiled with droppings it is best to replace them because it is nearly impossible to sterilize wood, the germs get right into the grain of the wood and this can make your bird ill. It is always best to replace them regularly.

Finches quite like to have swings in their cages too, they use them inbetween their flights up and down their cage. They like a little rest between bursts of flying.

Be sure that the swings are not placed in the way of the birds regular flight path and not over food containers. If their droppings are allowed to mix with their food they can become very ill indeed.

Finches like and thrive on sunlight so if possible put the cage near an open window. Always make sure they have some shade though if there is direct sunlight.

If it isn’t possible for them to be near natural sunlight you might want to investigate the use of a bird light which will be timed to give the bird an impression of night and day.

A good way to catch the droppings is to use shredded paper in the bottom of the cage. This will absorb any moisture and be easy to clear out.
